Alexander Zverev will represent Team Germany for the first time in two years at the 2025 Davis Cup Finals.
The 28-year-old is the highest-ranked player set to compete in Bologna, as Zverev sets his sights on Davis Cup glory. He last played at the Davis Cup in 2023, winning one of his two singles matches against Switzerland.
Zverev hasn’t been afraid to vocalise his thoughts about the new Davis Cup format, claiming the event is now an ‘exhibition’. During Team Germany’s pre-tournament press conference, Zverev shared why he decided to compete this year, despite his recent comments.
Alexander Zverev ‘truly believes’ Germany can win the Davis Cup
The German was bullish about his team’s chances in Bologna.
“I love this team. I understand everybody’s not getting younger. We all want to have success together. We only have a couple more years left to do that within this formation. This is why I’m here,” said Zverev.
“I truly believe that we have a great team. I truly believe we have a team that we can win this thing with. I’m looking forward to competing together with these guys.”
Zverev also spoke about the format of the Davis Cup Finals, which will feature eight teams playing in Bologna, Italy.
“I’m very happy to be with this team. I said it before. The only reason I’m here is because of this team,” he said.
“I still say, and I will keep saying, that I prefer the old format of the Davis Cup. I always said it, and I will continue saying it. I think it was history. I think it was a big part of playing the home and away matches.”
The Davis Cup format changed in 2019, removing home-and-away ties in favor of a ‘Finals’ event at one specific venue. It seems unlikely that the format will change any time soon, leaving Zverev to deal with the Davis Cup in its current state.

Zverev has never been past the semifinals of the Davis Cup, something he’ll be looking to achieve for the first time in 2025.
