David Beckham is one of the most famous faces on the planet, but even the former England captain can't escape the embarrassment that sometimes comes with being a dad.
David Beckham was left "heartbroken" after daughter Harper asked him to drop her off away from the school gates.
Fathers everywhere can take comfort knowing even David Beckham manages to embarrass his children. The former England and Manchester United star may have one of the most famous faces in the world, but even 'Golden Balls' isn't immune to causing cringe-worthy moments.
The ex-footballer's "heartbreaking" realisation struck following the school run. It was when daughter Harper requested to be dropped off some distance from the school gates that he understood he wasn't quite as cool as he might have hoped.
Wife Victoria shared the anecdote during a 2022 appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast. David had previously teased his wife about being chauffeured to school as a youngster by her father Tony in a Rolls Royce, and Victoria recalled those memories.
"We had the Rolls Royce, but because he was an electrical wholesaler he also had a van," she said. "Me and my sister used to say like 'please drop us [off] in the van.'
"I think more kids at school were being dropped off in a van and so when we were in the Rolls, we'd be like 'oh please drop us down the road.' Nowadays, I'd be like literally pull up right to the front gate. And I'd be proud to get out of that Rolls."
Harper, who was 11 when the podcast was recorded, experienced her own comparable moment after reaching that same stage in her childhood. The incident left its impression on Beckham as he grappled with accepting his daughter was maturing.
"David was having this conversation the other day when he was dropping off Harper," added Victoria. "She was like, 'Daddy can you drop me a little bit away from the school?'" Victoria then revealed that David was "heartbroken" before explaining: "She's our youngest daughter, and he was like, 'Oh really, this is happening.'
"And then he was like, 'If it's uncool that David Beckham's your dad...' I mean let's be honest, what hope do most of the other kids have?"
